The trailer for Decision to Leave gives fans an incredible glimpse into Park Chan-wook’s latest project.
It begins with an overhead shot of police officers searching the forest at night. The light from their flashlights is reminiscent of flies swarming around a dead body. Detectives and first responders then stand over the body of a man who fell while climbing off a nearby cliff (squeamish viewers beware: the trailer gives a gruesome portrayal of what the accident may have been like). Investigators meet the deceased’s wife, who strangely doesn’t seem very upset by her husband’s death. The detective and the woman appear to be in love with each other and the trailer features a series of clips of their unique, messy and mind-blowing relationship.
As if the trailer wasn’t enough to get moviegoers excited, TIFF’s Giovanna Fulvi gushed about the film, calling it an incredible love story and a fantastic noir thriller. “After his dazzling Vengeance trilogy whisked genre film fans into a world of graphic hyper-violence and powerful dark passions, Park Chan-wook upped the tone and style of his suspense thrillers with ‘The Handmaiden.’ He’s brought that same sophisticated elegance to his latest alluring masterpiece, and we can only be grateful.”
Other outlets are also praising Park Chan-wook’s latest project. Variety linked Decision to Leave to Parasite and Squid Game, calling it Korea’s next global hit, while IndieWire dubbed it “the most romantic movie of the year.”
Decision to Leave hits theaters on October 14th.
