While “Everybody Loves Raymond” focuses primarily on the marriage between Raymond and Debra (Patricia Heaton), the series also delves into Robert’s love life, particularly his on-and-off relationship with the bubbly Amy MacDougall (Monica Horan). Season 7 introduced viewers to Amy’s conservative Presbyterian parents, Hank and Pat MacDougall, played by Fred Willard and Georgia Engel, respectively.
On the subreddit r/EverybodyLovesRaymond, u/NewShinyThings confessed her love for Pat, who made a strong impression throughout her 13 episodes of the series. “Who else loved Pat? She wasn’t afraid to stand up to Marie, and she was actually quite funny!” The soft-spoken Pat was a welcome contrast to Marie Barone’s inquisitive, brash personality, as well as a character capable of delivering unlikely jabs. Adding to the hilarity was Engel’s shrill performance, once described as “sound.”[ing] like an angel who just sniffed some helium, according to The New York Times.
Another user added that towards the end of the series, Pat and her husband will be a much-needed addition. “Amy’s family gave the show a much-needed boost in later seasons,” wrote u/NoonTimeHoopsMVP. “They were great. The contrast between both families was hilarious.”
Apparently, the network thought the MacDougalls were almost funny enough to warrant their own series. “When I was done with ‘Everybody Loves Raymond,’ there was very serious talk that Brad and Amy’s parents would split and they would have used Fred Willard and me as Amy’s parents,” Engel said in a panel on television The Critics Association’s 2018 Summer Press Tour (via TV Insider). “The disappointment was so great when that didn’t happen,” she admitted. Luckily, the missed opportunity freed the actress for a late Broadway resurgence.
