Howard makes a series of bad decisions to head to Jimmy and Kim’s apartment that night, but Lalo is only there because he can’t find convincing evidence that Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) was behind his assassination. Lalo spends much of “Plan and Execution” in the sewers across from the laundry, which houses the infamous meth super lab built by Fring.
Although Lalo envisions an attack on the building that looks more like a vengeful suicide attack than a well-planned attack, he eventually devises a different tactic. When he finds out that Gus has tapped the phone at the retirement home where his uncle Hector Salamanca (Mark Margolis) lives, he stays one step ahead of Fring and security chief Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) by telling his uncle that he’s behind Gus is here.
In response, Mike pulls all non-essential security from the field and relocates them to the laundromat and Fring’s house. After observing this behavior and realizing that his bait was effective, Lalo sees a sewer-dwelling cockroach scurry off into the darkness and we see the light appear in his eyes as another path opens to the information that he needs before he opens. When we next see Lalo, he’s walking into Jimmy and Kim’s apartment, and a minute later Howard is dead.
Although some might have missed this small detail, the appearance of this insect is actually a clever reference to a line from Season 5 Episode 8 (“Bagman”). In this episode, Lalo compares Jimmy to a cockroach and tells Kim, “Your husband, he’s like him cucaracha, You know? Born Survivor.”
