The Eminence in Shadow is a Japanese light novel series written by Daisuke Aizawa and illustrated by Tozai. An anime TV series adaptation by Nexus Studio is scheduled to premiere in October 2022. Illustrator Makoto Iino, known for his work on the animes: Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town and Demon Lord, Retry! Adjusts Tozai’s original character designs for animation.

Makoto Iino has released the character designs for Cid Kagenou, Alexia Midgar, Iris Midgar, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, and Eta.

Profiles and designs of the main characters

Cid Kagenou (played by Seiichiro Yamashita) is the protagonist who, after reincarnating from Japan, ends up in a magical world as the son of a noble family. He is also secretly the leader of an organization he founded that fights in the shadows against the imaginary cult of Diabolos – Shadow Garden. (In reality, the cult does exist and Cid’s operations unwittingly interfere with the cult’s nefarious plans).

Claire Kagenou is Cid’s older sister who thinks she is stronger than Cid because she is a talented magic sword (warrior mage) and has a tendency to overreact when he teases her and ends up beating him. Although she is harsh on him, she cares for him and risks her own well-being if she believes her brother is in danger.

Alexia Midgar (played by Kana Hanazawa) is a haughty princess who likes to tease Cid. Although she got to see “Shadow” in action, she was unaware that Shadow was actually Cid.

Iris Midgar (played by Yoko Hikasa) is Alexia’s older sister and the first princess of the Kingdom of Midgar. She is considered the strongest swordswoman in the kingdom and is one of the knights of the kingdom of Midgar. She has a strong sense of justice and tends to be overprotective of her sister.

Rose Oriana is the princess of the neighboring kingdom of Oriana, known for its art. She was expected to study traditional arts, but decided to become an exchange student at Midgard Spellsword Academy and instead learn swordplay. She becomes student council president and gains a reputation for being the top female swordsman in the academy, second only to the first Princess of Midgar, Iris Midgar.

Alpha (played by Asami Seto) is a beautiful elf girl who becomes the first member of Shadow Garden. When Cid first met her, she was possessed by demons. Cid decided to experiment on her and found a cure for her ailment. Realizing that Cid had saved her life, she swore allegiance to him. She became responsible for recruiting the other six members of Shadow Garden and leads them in their pursuit of the Cult of Diabolos.

Beta (played by Inori Minase) is the second member of Shadow Garden to be discovered by Alpha. She is a natural beauty with a curvaceous figure. In her spare time, she writes a book titled The War Chronicles of Shadow-sama detailing the exploits of Cid in his Shadow Persona.

Gamma (played by Suzuko Mimori) is a young woman who is physically weak and lacking in magical powers, but makes up for it with her high intellect. Gamma is the head of the Mitsugoshi Company – the company Shadow Garden gets its money from. Cid decided to tell Gamma about concepts and products that existed in Japan, calling it his “shadow knowledge” so that Gamma could replicate such items and sell them for a large profit.

Delta (played by Fairouz Ai) is a girl from the beastkin who lacks magical powers and not very good sword skills. Delta makes up for this by using brute force to defeat her enemies. Delta also uses her keen sense of smell to track and hunt her targets. Delta only listens to those she deems stronger than her and has only acknowledged Alpha and Cid to date.

Epsilon (played by Hisako Kanemoto) is an elf girl gifted with refined magical control and has adopted a haughty attitude due to her great abilities. She is adept at using and manipulating “slime bodysuits” that all members of Shadow Garden use.

Zeta (played by Ayaka Asai) is a loner and behaves like a ninja, roaming around on secret missions to gather information and secretly lurking in the shadows.

Eta (played by Reina Kondo) is an elf who loves to research and is also an architect. Eta finds it difficult to get up in the morning and she also tends to sleepwalk.

Nu is a formerly noble lady who was cast aside when possessed by demons. She was later rescued by one of the Seven Shadows and offered a job in the Shadow Garden as a member of a new department called “Numbers”. Her name “Nu” means 13. Nu is a master of disguise. She is also able to use specially treated slime to mimic skin and mold it into the desired shape to impersonate anyone she wants.
