Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Eric Kripke explained the complicated story behind Black Noir actor Nathan Mitchell, who returns as a new character in Season 4 of The Boys. According to Kripke, Season 4 will see a new character invent the Black Noir suit, but the same actor will play the role under the mask. “Another character wearing the Black Noir suit,” Kripke confirmed.
The reason is that we’ve never seen Mitchell’s face on the show. The actor who played Black Noir in the flashbacks was actually a very different cast member, Fritzy-Klevans Destine (via IMDb). Since this is the only version of the character we’ve seen unmasked, Mitchell may return in Season 4.
“It’s definitely not the last time we’ve seen Black Noir as a hero,” Kripke assured fans. “It’s just the guy who was inside [the Noir suit] in Season 3 he’s gone.” It’s an odd situation, admittedly, but the logic behind the decision seems pretty reasonable. “We’ll investigate as the season progresses, but Nathan is playing a whole new character.” With The Boys already beginning filming for its fourth season in late summer 2022 (via Collider), we shouldn’t have to wait too long to to see what this new version of Black Noir will look like and how it will affect the other characters of the series.
