In his interview with GQ, The Boys star Karl Urban described how he set up a moment for Billy Butcher that was actually made better when he botched it on camera during the first take. The scene comes in Season 1 when Butcher tries to convince Hughie to install a listening device at Vought, the corrupt company that controls the Supes.
According to Urban, he thought the scene was reminiscent of the famous moment in The Matrix when Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne) asks Neo (Keanu Reeves) to choose between the red pill and the blue pill, so he gave Kripke the idea to take it himself to relate this scene to Butcher. Kripke was there, and Urban says, “We shot that, and that’s what they ended up using.” But once the cameras rolled, there was one major hurdle: Urban couldn’t remember which pill did what, and he screwed up the dialogue.
“I stuffed it,” Urban recalls with a grin. “I mixed up the pills, which was an absolute accident. At the moment it was just comedy genius … It’s very butchery.” Indeed, the scene it aired is hilarious. Butcher tries to get Hughie to plant the bug, telling him, “Or you can take the blue pill… or is it the red pill? Anyway, take the other pill…” For his part, Quaid seems quick to capitalize on his scene partner’s mistake to improve the moment, with Hughie frantically responding, “What pill should I take?”
