Viewers may be familiar with what becomes of The Bear, which can only be described as a fast-paced anxiety attack. But the first scene of the series is something completely different. At night over the Chicago River, Carmy walks down an abandoned bridge where a bear growls in a cage. He quietly approaches the animal and tries to calm the bear down before opening the cage and being attacked. Carmy wakes up startled, the victim of just one of many stressful dreams the chef has to endure. According to showrunner Joanna Calo, this should entice viewers to watch.

“You have to get people to see more!” Calo explained Complex. Although she wasn’t entirely serious about tricking the audience, an important element is to immediately grab the audience’s attention. With so much content out there, it’s insane to get viewers to tune in. Jeremy Allen White also loved additional elements while watching a snippet of the episode.

“There’s this sound effect that wasn’t there before of a burner trying to get on, which I thought was really nice,” White noted. Just before the scene fades from the black, a burner clicks, perfectly anticipating the chaos in Carmy’s life. Add to that the eerie view of the Chicago Bridge, which was completely closed off for filming. A calm before the storm, this sombre opening contrasts beautifully with the ferocious intensity employed by the rest of the show.
