In “The Big Bang Theory”, Season 12, Episode 10 (“The VCR Illumination”), Sheldon is not in a good mood when he learns that his and Amy Farrah Fowler’s (Mayim Bialik) theory on superasymmetry has already been tackled would. Sheldon then begins reevaluating every opinion he’s ever had. To help, Leonard pulls out a videotape that Sheldon told him to keep unless it’s an emergency. The tape contains a pep talk recorded by his younger self, portrayed by Armitage, to help his future self one day. After all, the only person Sheldon takes advice from is himself.

This isn’t the only “Young Sheldon” star to make an appearance. The pep talks are interrupted by a high school football game accidentally taped by Sheldon’s father, coach George Cooper Sr. (Lance Barber). Surprisingly, George’s locker room speech (“You learn as much about who you are and what you’re made of as you do for success”) resonates with Sheldon. It’s quite a tearful scene since, as fans know, George dies when Sheldon is 14 years old.

Executive producer Steve Holland said of the episode (via USA Today): “[It] was a big one and ticks a big box. We wanted to find a fun way to tie these two shows together.”

Off-camera, the two Sheldons share a similar dynamic. Just as young Sheldon seeks to redeem adult Sheldon’s passion for science, Armitage redeems Parsons’ love of acting. He said of Armitage in an interview with ET, “There’s only one way he’s approaching all of this that makes the process so much fun and enjoyable. I think they’re a reminder for anyone who’s been doing it for a while to remember how fun it is.”
