In July 2022, Sylvester Stallone took to social media to file complaints against “Rocky” producer Irwin Winkler and his family for refusing to give Stallone any rights to the franchise (via Variety). Some time has passed since then, so things have changed? In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the three-time Oscar nominee was asked if things had changed. “No. That will never happen,” Stallone says. “It was a deal made without my knowledge by people I thought were close to me and they basically gave up all the rights I would have had. At the time I was so excited to be working and I didn’t see it as a business.”

Stallone spoke of the irony of the situation, how he was responsible for Rocky Balboa’s existence and so much of his iconic dialogue, but technically didn’t own an aspect of the character. He also mentioned that after the release of the first film, no one expected the character and franchise to launch decades later. In another interview with Deadline, Stallone explained that property rights weren’t universally pushed in the ’70s.

Irwin Winkler and the late Robert Chartoff produced the first five “Rocky” films between 1976 and 1990. Creed movies. While Stallone won’t star in the upcoming Creed III, he is listed as a producer alongside the Winklers.
