In an interview with IGN, members of the cast of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero spoke about parenting and found a family that underpins the animated film. Kyle Hebert, the voice of Gohan, summed up the conversation by saying, “It’s definitely true that Piccolo is quite a lot [Gohan’s] real dad through thick and thin. Not that Goku doesn’t love Gohan, he obviously does a lot, but he’s busy saving the universe.” Somewhat in Goku’s defense, Christopher Sabat, the voice of Vegeta and Piccolo, offered that Goku never had a father figure himself . As such, he never had an example to guide his own time as a parent.” And while Piccolo comes from a kind of tribal mentality where everyone is grouped together,” Sabat continued. “It would make sense for Piccolo to take on that kind of nurturing of sensibilities that Goku can’t have.”

To please everyone, Sean Schemmel, the voice of Goku, admitted, “Akira Toriyama recently made the bet ‘Is Goku a bad father?’ decided for himself and basically said in an interview like last year that he’s not the best. So Piccolo is really the driving force.” The Dragon Ball franchise focuses largely on Goku as the protagonist, but that doesn’t mean he’s beyond doubt. As the cast mentioned, he’s a dutiful hero for sure, but he’s a miserable father – the ultimate conclusion to any fantasy hero’s storyline (we’re still salty about Aang).
