According to The Hollywood Reporter, the move to bring The Boogeyman to theaters came after producers and executives were pleasantly surprised by the audience’s positive attitude following a test screening in December. The film was also shown to Stephen King, who approved of both the film and the new plans.

The move also follows Disney’s recent C-suite reorganization, which saw former CEO Bob Iger return to replace his own successor, Bob Chapek. Iger doesn’t seem to share Chapek’s enthusiasm for streaming. During Chapek’s brief tenure, many films have been released directly to the company’s Disney+ and Hulu platforms. Last year’s Predator franchise entry, Prey, was released direct-to-stream on Hulu, leading many to wish it could have been experienced on the big screen.

But with horror making a major comeback in theaters, improving The Boogeyman might be a wise move. Most recently, Universal Pictures has grossed nearly $100 million worldwide with “M3GAN” (via Box Office Mojo), and its sequel has already reached a January 2025 release date. The Menu, a restaurant-themed comedy horror thriller starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes, made waves late last year. Meanwhile, “Smile,” a horror mystery starring Sosie Bacon, generated a strong showing of $212 million in box office receipts (via Box Office Mojo).

The Boogeyman is slated to hit theaters on June 2, 2023.
