States With Low Vaccination Rates Portray An Increase In Hospitalizations And Deaths

With the new variants of the Covid-19 virus, many states that have low vaccination numbers have seen 4 times more hospitalizations and 5 times more deaths. While the effects of the Corona virus have ravaged lives throughout the country, there has been more deaths and hospitalizations recorded in those states that have shown lower public priority to vaccines.

A stark contrast can be noted in states with regards to the amount of vaccinations. Ten states that have recorded the lowest number of vaccinations show only 41% of citizens to be fully vaccinated. In contrast, the ten states that have reported the highest vaccinations rates display data that implies 58% of citizens are fully vaccinated.

As per the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 93% of American population is susceptible to the virus as they live in areas of high rates of Covid-19 transmissions. According to an analysis of federal data, hospitalizations of residents are 4 times higher and death cases are 5.5 times higher in the states with less vaccination rates.

The states that are measured to have the lowest vaccination numbers are Idaho, Alabama, Wyoming, West Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, North Dakota, Arkansas and Louisiana. Whereas the states measuring the highest vaccination rates are New Jersey, Massachusetts, Washington, Vermont, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maine and Maryland.

In the bottom ten states measuring the lowest vaccination rates, data has recorded around 34 deaths for every 1 million residents as well as 39 Covid-19 hospitalizations for 100,000 residents. In contrast in the top ten states projecting the biggest vaccination rates, reports from John Hopkins University indicate only six deaths per 1 million results and 10 hospitalizations for every 100,000 residents.

The director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky commented that the country records around 500 Corona virus related deaths a day at a time when the deaths are a preventable circumstance. She explains that data has shown so many tragic stories of people who failed to get the Covid-19 vaccine only to contract a severe case of the Corona virus.

According to Dr. Walensky these areas have also reported a increase in the number of people checking into hospitals as well as an inflation in the number of deaths. Medical professionals reasons for worrying do not end here. New data has shown that with the reopening of schools, there has been a related jump in Corona virus cases among children.

The jump in Covid-19 cases in children cannot be stemmed as many children are not yet eligible for the vaccine. Medical experts warn that the situation is sure to get worse with schools reopening. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there have been over 121,000 Corona virus cases reported in the past week. This number is 14 times higher than the number of weekly cases seen in June.

Dr. Peter Hotez who is the dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine says that this increase in cases is only the start. Dr. Hotez explains that this increase in cases is emerging when schools are still shut. The numbers will only rise when schools reopen. He explains that for instance, August 23rd marks the opening of the Houston Independent school district which will once serve as an accelerate to the Covid-19 cases in the area.

As per the American Academy of Pediatrics, the rise in the number of cases among children is greater than the coinciding cases among adults. In the past week, Covid-19 cases in children average 18 % while it was only 14.4 % for the majority if the pandemic.

The new Delta variant is not helping matters as without vaccinations of a large part of the population, the variant has played a significant role in contributing to the rise in Covid-19 cases. Moreover governors of certain states have tried to ban masks mandates that could potentially prevent more hospitalizations and deaths.

Dr. Paul Offit of the Food and Drug Administration commented on the matter saying what’s the point of tying the hands of public health officials behind their backs. He says that we should make use of both weapons vaccines and masks. Masks especially is the only form of protection available for children below the age of 12 who are yet ineligible for the Covid-19 vaccine.
