States Can Now Pre-Order Covid Vaccine Shots For Younger Kids

US Health officials have now opened doors for states to reserve Covid-19 vaccine doses for younger kids. The action is taken under the vaccination campaign for younger children. Pre-booking will start next week.

The Covid-19 vaccine by Pfizer is, for now, available to kids aged 12 and above. However, federal officials plan to roll out smaller doses of the same vaccine for children aged five to eleven. This age group involves about 28 million US citizens.

To power up the vaccination drive and to prepare states and cities for the vaccination of the younger kids, the CDC released a seven-page long document.

The document includes guidelines to help out states in setting up an extended vaccination program.

The guidelines also state that the pharmacies can give vaccine shots to children. For such vaccination, only the vaccine dose specifically packed for children under 12 must be used.

However, the guidelines do not address questions like should children be compulsorily vaccinated for schools; or how much one can rely on school-based clinics. All such questions will be handled within states and cities separately.

The guidelines have been released as the nation now enters into another phase of the vaccine drive started ten months back. The vaccination drive aims at vaccinating as many people as possible in the United States. The pandemic has so far killed approximately 7,20,000 citizens alone in the United States.

The Covid-19 virus proves to be more dangerous towards older adults. With the high number of hospitalizations and deaths among older adults, they have been said to be the most vulnerable group.

Apart from them, some kids are also at high risk of severe illness. Reports from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggest about 540 children in the United States have died due to the Covid-19 virus.

Experts believe that vaccinating children can prevent the spread of the virus from children to adults effectively.

Pfizer and BioNTech are successfully researching the Covid-19 vaccine for younger kids. The pharma giants say that administering two shots of their one-third portion of the Covid-19 vaccine for adults can safely be given to children. Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech believe that their Covid-19 vaccine is completely safe and highly effective for children aged five to eleven.

The Pharma giants have also submitted their data for the same to the US Food and Drugs Administration. The committee will be discussing the application, followed by a debate near the end of October. If the application successfully passes the FDA discussion and debate: the application will then reach the CDC. The CDC will then authorize and offer recommendations in early November.

Dr. Marcus Plescia, the chief medical officer of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, said, ” we are not sure as to how many of the kids will be able to get the vaccine shots straight away.” He added, ” it is, although certainly, predictable that it will be a very busy schedule once the vaccine is out for younger children.”
