Though fans have grown weary of Randy’s antics, we can often see that at least he is to attempt to be a decent father – even if he fails spectacularly. Unfortunately, the same can’t really be said of the duo that Redditors believe are the worst parents on South Park: Butters’ father and mother, Stephen and Linda Stotch.
“At least Randy never tried to kill his kid. As far as we know,” u/VegetaArcher wrote in the u/TheMeganProducts thread, asking for the worst “South Park” parent. While they state that almost all of the parents on the show are awful (except maybe Tolkien’s), some have checked Cartman’s mother, Kenny’s parents, and Tweek’s parents’ names. Ultimately, however, the majority of fans seemed to agree that the Stotchs are the worst. “I think once you try to drown your son in a river, you win the worst parent,” said u/PossibleHistorical95.
Attempted murder was just one of many things his parents did to Butters, as fans involved in another Reddit thread discussed. Aside from neglect and abuse, they have sent him to a “conversion therapy” camp, locked him in a dungeon in their basement, and attempted to heal his perceived trauma by inflicting actual trauma on him. Based on the show’s animation director Eric Stough, Butters is a constant source of naivety and positivity, which Macleans says Matt Stone described as the embodiment of “permanent innocence.” It seems the show constantly tests that innocence and positivity by putting him in the most terrifying situations. But he’s one of Stone’s favorite characters, as he told NPR, “These are the funniest shows you can do is Cartman and Butters.”
