Interview with Studio No Border: Thomas Romain talks about the skateboard designs

Studio No Border was founded in 2018 by Thomas Romain. It’s a small team of 15 French and Japanese artists working on animation projects, video games, comics and board games.

Romain previously worked with Studio Bones on Space Dandy. After Studio No Border formed, they worked on Carole & Tuesday. Notably, both series were created by Shinichiro Watanabe.

Romain’s involvement in the anime SK8 The Infinity began when he left a Bones meeting via Carole & Tuesday and met the producer for the new skateboard anime. She asked if they were interested in designing the skateboards and then introduced the team to director Hiroko Utsumi.

Studio No Border brought in a consultant to ensure the authenticity of the skateboard designs to make them work in reality. The director wanted the decals on each board to visually reflect each character’s personality.

“Ayumi Kakei (aka Nelnal), whose style is very ‘pop’, did the illustrations for Reki, Langa and Miya. Loic Locatelli, a French comic artist, made the stickers for SHADOW and JOE, and my job was to make ADAM’s stickers,” Romain said in an interview with FUNimation.

SK8 Infinity production at Studio Bones suffered from problems

When original work involves amazing creators, the results are often amazing in and of themselves, but even seasoned freelancers take the time it takes to get the job done right.

In this case, Sakuga Blog says that Studio Bones brought on board a tight-knit small team that allowed them to create a focused vision from an artistic point of view, but the problem, in short, is that “the team is far too small for the crowd was of the remaining work, causing BONES to hit the panic button harder than they’ve had to in a long time.”

The same people were credited for directing duties and major animation work. Usually this isn’t a problem if you can handle the workload, but the 2020 pandemic brought unique circumstances. The pandemic has shown how unprepared the anime industry is for accidents that disrupt standard production schedules, let alone a large-scale disaster throwing a production schedule completely off balance.

“Studios just have very little room to maneuver, which is no small issue considering how often things don’t go as intended,” explained Sakuga Blog. “BONES is an animation powerhouse that few can compare to, and even they will find it difficult to avoid death when they have people from their other subsidiary studios [A through E] join in a hurry. Had it been a different studio we wouldn’t even be seeing the final episodes of SK8 any time soon – and that still wouldn’t mean they could do the finale in their spare time.”

Casual anime fans probably won’t notice that the staff has made an effort to maintain quality. Let’s just be thankful that the anime wasn’t delayed by COVID-19.

SK8 The Infinity 2 Release Date Predictions: Is Late 2023 Likely?

Until the last update, Studio Bones or other companies related to the anime production have not officially confirmed the release date of SK8 The Infinity Season 2. However, the production of a sequel to SK8 Season 2 was announced on August 14, 2022.

Once the news is officially confirmed, this article will be updated with the relevant information.

In the meantime, there is speculation as to when the SK8 The Infinity Season 2 premiere date will be in the future.

The main problem is that the anime project is an original story focusing on the characters Reki Kyan and Langa Hasegawa. Luckily, the ending of Sk8 The Infinity Episode 12 left the door open for a sequel.

The real question, of course, was whether the financial numbers would be good enough to prompt the anime production committee to renew the TV series. These organizations are risk-averse, so it’s extremely unusual for a second season to be pre-planned for an original work.

Streaming revenue is the biggest factor in the anime industry today. FUNimation doesn’t usually release viewership numbers or popular anime lists, but we got an idea of the anime’s popularity in Japan when the Sk8 The Infinity Blu-Ray/DVD volumes were released.

The first volume sold 7,903 copies in its first week in Japan. That’s about double what’s considered good.

The good news is that reviews of SK8 The Infinity have been overwhelmingly positive. This resulted in good disc sales and streaming numbers, which is why SK8 The Infinity 2 has been renewed.

Even at best, productions are planned years in advance, so anime fans have been in it for the long haul. It’s possible that when SK8 Season 2 was first announced, only pre-production had started.

Unfortunately, that means the best-case scenario for SK8 The Infinity Season 2 is late 2023, although it could even be 2024. Stay tuned!
