Showrunner Erica Messer Didn’t Want Criminal Minds: Evolution To Come Across As The Sopranos

With F-Bombs now being dropped frequently and the gore heightened, Criminal Minds: Evolution is a little darker and a little more disturbing than the original series. But Erica Messer doesn’t want to push the envelope too much, like “The Sopranos,” for example.

“I didn’t want the Paramount+ version to feel like ‘Criminal Minds After Dark,'” she said. “I didn’t want us to suddenly be unrecognizable. I have a feeling that anything you imagine will be worse than anything I could show you, so I’ll retire. There’s some things you needed to see – you needed to see this spine [incision] to get the effect of it, but you didn’t actually see him cut; You just saw the guy’s reaction.”

While these details are a bit more gruesome and realistic in some ways, they don’t necessarily distort the underlying premise of the series. And while the elevated language is sometimes noticeable, Messer still keeps it within reason.

“We joke that our show has 12 to 112 year olds watching us,” Messer said. “So also with that [foul] Language is there, but we didn’t want it to be free of charge either. If it feels appropriate to drop something more than “damn,” then we do it. But we didn’t want to sound like ‘The Sopranos’ all of a sudden.”

Criminal Minds: Evolution streams new episodes Thursdays on Paramount+.
