In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rhys Coiro revealed some interesting information about his preparations to become Donny Blaze in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. As he recalls, the goal during his preparatory period was to make the most of his character’s profession as a stage magician. “We had a technical advisor, an amazing magician on set that I worked with to talk tricks – and we wanted to do as many tricks as possible on the show,” Coiro explained. He adds that what he really liked about Blaze’s character was the mixture of Kamar-Taj and sleight of hand magic.
Another important element of Coiro’s “She-Hulk” prep came from the stunt department, who were a big part of presenting Donny Blaze. He worked closely with those involved to put together Blaze’s first scene, in which he “levitates” in front of a handful of viewers, and to help him plan his underperforming magical acts. On the magical aspect of his role, Coiro notes, “It’s so interesting that it’s a sub-discipline of the performance. There’s magic and clowning and stunts, and it’s fun to explore those other areas of the performance and how they all connect.”
We’ll have to wait and see if Rhys Coiro’s Donny Blaze will return for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and if he does, one can only hope he’ll have found a new, more secure day job.
