In late December 2022, Sarah Michelle Gellar spoke to SFX Magazine (via MovieWeb) about “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” More specifically, she revealed if she’s interested in returning to the role of Buffy Summers in any shape or form. “I’m not. I’m very proud of the show we’ve created and it doesn’t need to be done. We’ve done that,” she explained, though she mentions she wouldn’t go against the powers that be without them keeping the story behind the series alive. As she states, it’s a story of female empowerment – a fact that sums up the series’ ending perfectly.
Additionally, there is another factor to consider when considering a “Buffy” revival: time. As of May 2023, the show will not have aired for 20 years, and as a grown adult, Gellar doesn’t see fit to keep her version of Buffy Summers. She says, “The metaphors of ‘Buffy’ were the horrors of puberty. I think I look young, but I’m not an adolescent.” With that, it couldn’t be clearer that Gellar’s time in the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is long over, which may come as a disappointment to some, but her reasons make sense . In addition, Gellar remains busy with other large and small screen productions.
Certainly one day Buffy the Vampire Slayer will return to television, and if it does, it will be without Sarah Michelle Gellar at the helm.
