HIV is the short form for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which is often termed AIDS, which is the short form for an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome that majorly affects the human immune system and progressively leads to the failure of the immune system and allows life-threatening diseases like cancer or opportunistic diseases to thrive.
San Franciso Played A Vital Role In The AIDS Fight
Most of the HIV cases are transmitted through sexual intercourse that occurs by the contact of blood, pre-ejaculate, semen, and vaginal fluids. Researchers have also found that these infections can be transmitted in same-sex couples or opposite-sex couples. And non-sexual transmission can occur from an infected mother to her infant during the pregnancy, during childbirth by exposure to her blood or vaginal fluid, and through breast milk. There are different types of HIV and it is a member of the genus Lentivirus.
HIV infects vital cells in the human immune system, such as helper T cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. HIV infection leads to low levels of helper T cells through several mechanisms, including pyroptosis of abortively infected T cells, apoptosis of uninfected bystander cells, the direct viral killing of infected cells, and killing of infected T cells by CD8+ cytotoxic lymphocytes that recognize infected cells. Many HIV-positive people are unaware that they are positive. For example in 2001 less than 1% of the sexually active urban population in Africa had been tested and this proportion is even lower in rural populations.
The management of HIV/AIDS normally includes the use of multiple antiretroviral drugs. In many parts of the world, HIV has become a chronic condition in which progression to AIDS is increasingly rare. It is also known that U=U is an effective HIV prevention method when an undetectable viral load is maintained.
As per the reports, San Franciso played a critical role in fighting AIDS in the United States of America and around the world. Leaders and activists said that it marks the 40th anniversary of the first reported cases of the illness. The United States House speaker and Mayor London Breed spoke at the private ceremony in the National AIDS Memorial Grove Gate Park that when the first case of AID was detected in 1981, San Franciso was left on their own, but they did what San Franciso can do best, they came together and the system of care developed to help those who are struggling with HIV or AIDS that was developed right here in San Franciso. The renowned research also continues till day and was established right here in the great city of the United States of America.
Pelosi, who hosted the first fundraiser for the now-famous AIDS Quilt said that the city has been persistent, compassionate, and a science-based approach to the crisis has helped San Franciso and the nation now to beat the virus. He also mentioned that the AIDS campaign has helped other campaigns to serve as a model including fights against breast cancer, for marriage equality, and against the military’s former ‘don’t as don’t tell policy that prevented the gay people from openly serving. Joshua Gamson, a member of the National AIDS Memorial Grove board also mentioned the coincidence of attending an AIDS memorial while the nation is getting through the coronavirus pandemic.
He also mentioned that it is odd to be coming out of a pandemic and reflecting on another and also mentioned that this was his first time in the grove since the pandemic and he feels like he is coming out of a cocoon and into the memories of the AIDS pandemic. The ceremony finished with a line of people formed to start the hour-long ritual of reading the name of the people who have died from AIDS.
