In an interview with Nerds and Beyond, Samantha Smith explained why The Raid is her favorite Supernatural episode. “I had a moment in my boots where I was like, ‘I’m actually grounded now,’ as me, as an actress, and as Mary, the character. So she was in charge of the raid, she was in command of everything, and everything went sideways, but she was still a formidable presence.” It would obviously take a lot of time for Smith to befriend again, as it would for her character Mary was to come to terms with the fact that she was dead, had come back, and was missing 30 years of her life.
There was also a lot of pressure on Mary’s character and therefore on Smith for portraying her. Dean often lamented that he couldn’t grow up with his mother by his side, and since he dreamed of her being perfect, Mary had a duty to be a mother who reverently loved Dean without living up to his impossible expectations. As an actress, Smith also had to worry about fan reactions, as they too were concerned about the brothers and the meaning of this reunion.
Meeting both at the same time can be difficult, and Smith argued that this episode not only made her feel more confident as an actress playing the role, but that Mary was finally comfortable in her new reality. “In that episode, she took charge, she was in charge and she felt comfortable and determined, and that’s when it all came together for me,” she said. There was so much fighting and so much going on and a culmination of many storylines that it really felt like a transition to me.
