Acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates talks to Ryan Coogler about Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The Between the World and Me writer asked Coogler when he finished writing the Wakanda Forever screenplay, with the latter admitting he finished it before Chadwick Boseman died, which apparently led to a major rewrite.
The script discussion between Coogler and Coates then led to one of the most emotional moments of the podcast. Coates asked what Boseman said when Coogler called him to ask if he would like to read the script. The director was taking a minute on the podcast to collect himself when he noticeably choked on the question. About 20 seconds of silence passes before Coogler says, “He was tired bro. I could tell he was tired.” He then admitted that he had been trying to reach Boseman for a few days before they finally connected for their last phone call together.
“I could see that he was laying down,” Coogler recalled. “And Simone [Ledward] was with him. He kicked out Simone for telling her he didn’t want her to hear anything that could get him in trouble with his NDA. And she didn’t want to leave him, so I could tell something was wrong. Coogler said Boseman and Ledward were planning their wedding in South Carolina — according to Us Weekly, the duo married just months before Boseman’s death. Boseman then asked Coogler about his child as he sadly missed his friend’s baby shower that had just taken place.
