According to Deadline, “One Piece Film: Red” grossed between $1.6 million and $1.8 million from Thursday’s screenings alone. Over the weekend, industry estimates project that the anime will knock Black Adam off the top of the domestic box office by Monday, November 7, 2022, potentially with a total gross of between $14 million and $16 million. This will deny the DC superhero film a third consecutive week at number one if those estimates come true. The fantasy adventure directed by Goro Taniguchi was booked on IMAX and PLF screens in addition to 2,415 other screens across the country.
This continues a strong year for anime in terms of both global and American ticket sales. As of August 2022, “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” raised an impressive $38.1 million in North America alone after being shown to over 3,000 cinema screens in August 2022 (via Gold Derby). One Piece Film: Red seems destined to be a historical film through and through. The film has already become one of the highest-grossing anime in Japanese history in its home country and continues to set trends and break records wherever it ends up.
