Kevin Smith and religion have always had a complicated relationship, as his films make clear. His earliest example of distorting religion through his writing was Dogma, published in 1999. In an essay that was released with the Dogma special edition DVD, Smith revealed that the idea had been leaked before Clerks. After the runaway success of Chasing Amy, Smith finally felt he had reached the point where he could get Dogma right.

The film follows Bethany Sloane (Linda Fiorentino), a counselor at an abortion clinic, as she plunges into a conflict between heaven and hell. Two fallen angels, Bartleby (Ben Affleck) and Loki (Matt Damon), attempt to reenter heaven, inadvertently destroying all existence in the process. Jay and Silent Bob help Bethany on her way by getting into the movie in a great way by beating up some demonic hockey punks. The film is packed with outstanding talent including Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, George Carlin and Alan Rickman. It also includes one of the most bizarre screen depictions of God, played here by pop singer Alanis Morissette. From start to finish, “Dogma” is a Smith who’s firing on all cylinders and is a perfect blend of his standard Snark with fairly compelling storytelling.
