Pfizer’s Emergency Use Authorized For Kids 5 To 11 By FDA Advisor Panel

On Tuesday, a panel of the US Food and Drug Administration’s advisors voted on the recommendation of the emergency use of a relatively smaller dose of the Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine for children between the age of five and eleven, planning to circulate the shots for the twenty-eight million kids across the United States of America.

The voting results were almost unanimous, at 17-0, where one person refused to vote. The FDA is expected to dictate its final verdict on the matter in a few days.

Even after the vote count, it was observed that some members of the panels were struggling with their decision.

Dr. Eric Rubin, a panel member and editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, stated during the meeting that they found it tougher than they had expected it to be.

He said that although they knew that the data showed the vaccine works, they were worried about some side effects that may not be accounted for.

He stated the same because there are some cases of a heart condition called myocarditis that has emerged in some younger children who have received the Covid-19 vaccine. While another panel member asked about the need for vaccines for young children.

Another committee member, Dr. James Hildreth, who is the president and CEO of Meharry Medical College in Tennessee, stated that it seemed to him as if the vaccinations of children were being given a green flag to protect the adults, but it should be the other way around. He exclaimed that vaccination of children who are at higher risk can be considered but vaccinating all of them seemed a bit too much.

Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine researcher at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and another member of the advisory panel stated that it is very difficult to make a decision that concerns millions of children which is based on the study of only a thousand study subjects.

But he also emphasized that the potential threat from a pediatric infection with Covid-19 is real. He also added that there are many children between the age of five and eleven who can contract this disease and can fall sick and be hospitalized, or even die from it.

The same views were shared on the decision by Dr. Amanda Cohn, who is the chief medical officer at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and another member of the advisory panel. She stated that it seemed pretty clear to her that the benefits of the vaccine seemed to outweigh the risks, as children are being put in the ICU, who are suffering from long-term effects after the Covid-19 virus and some of them are even dying.

According to statistics, around 1.9 million children between the ages of five and eleven have been tested positive for the Covid-19 virus during the time of the pandemic, and more than eight thousand four hundred children have been hospitalized, as stated by Dr. Fiona Havers, who is a medical officer in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

She also stated that children who get hospitalized have high chances of being admitted to the intensive care unit and are more likely to need a ventilator than children who get hospitalized due to the flu.
