In an interview a month before Peaky Blinders Season 6, Steven Knight spoke to Express about how the show would ultimately end. He had previously stated that the show was not intended to cover World War II. However, he admits that he felt compelled to back up that initial claim with Season 6. “I… revised the scope of what it is. It will now go into WWII and beyond. ‘Cause I just think there’s energy in the world for that. I want to keep it going,” Knight said, expressing an interest in exploring where the story might go during and after the global conflict.
Knight also notes that part of the reason he ended up expanding the scope of Peaky Blinders had to do with fan support for it. The overwhelming response to it told him he could keep the story alive and push it further, and it’s this fan interaction that makes him so eager to bring the Peaky Blinders movie out. “I mean, the social media community is so strong and people talk to each other. But actually being physically together is going to be really interesting,” he told Heartbreak in July 2022 (via Digital Spy), throwing in that hopefully production on the film will begin soon.
While the original Peaky Blinders season 6 ending might sound interesting, Steven Knight made the right choice if what we got better fits the movie schedule.
