On June 22, 2022, the official TONIKAWA Twitter account announced that “love is in the air this summer” and that a special episode for the franchise is coming to Crunchyroll!

Fans of the anime series got stuck at the end of Season 1, but TONIKAWA Season 2 has been confirmed to be in production. A new image for the special episode teases that we might at last see the long-awaited wedding between Nasa Yuzaki and Tsukasa Yuzaki… sort of. The special episode is called “Uniform (Seifuku)” so the story probably focuses on cosplay, not an actual wedding.

The fantasy rom-com anime TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You was inspired by the Japanese manga series of the same name, written and illustrated by Kenjiro Hata (Hayate the Combat Butler). As of February 2018, the manga has been published in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday, and the manga’s chapters have been collected into 20 volumes.

The English version of the manga has been licensed by Viz Media in North America and 11 volumes have been released to date. From October to December 2020, an anime television series adaptation by Seven Arcs aired on Tokyo MX in Japan and other channels.

Hiroshi Ikehata directed the anime series, and Kazuho Hyodo was in charge of the series’ script. Masakatsu Sasaki did the character design and Endo composed the music. The opening theme song entitled “Koi no Uta” (Love Song) was performed by Akari Kito and the closing theme song entitled “Tsuki to Hoshizora” (Moon and Starry Sky) was performed by KanoeRana.

What is the plot of TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You?

The story begins on a snowy winter night; A young man with the odd name Nasa Yuzaki meets a beautiful otherworldly girl just after getting his grades on his high school practice exam. Deciding that fate has given him this golden opportunity to talk to her, he rushes after her into the street only to find himself in danger in front of a truck. Fortunately, the girl notices the sudden danger he is in and manages to save him.

Afterwards, Nasa follows the girl to a bus stop and is inspired to suddenly confess his love to her. The girl, Tsukasa Tsukuyomi, is terrified at first but eventually agrees to become his girlfriend, but only if they get married first. Nasa immediately agrees to this condition. However, when Tsukasa disappears after their encounter, Nasa searches for her Years until time flies and suddenly he’s 18th Birthday.

While Nasa is celebrating his birthday alone and reflecting on the promise he made to Tsukasa, she suddenly shows up at his door with a marriage form. This is how their new life together as a “happily married couple” begins.

Is Tsukasa Tsukyomi human? Immortal? An alien?

One of the most interesting things about this anime is the mystery behind Tsukasa Tsukyomi. At first she appears to be a normal girl, but there are hints throughout the series that she may not be human. Starting with how she was able to save Nasa from the truck, and although she sustained some injuries, it seems like she has superhuman strength.

The anime often compares Tsukasa to Princess Kaguya – the moon princess from Japanese folklore. In the story of the bamboo cutter, Kaguya finally leaves her husband and goes to the moon. This might explain why Nasa seems concerned about Tsukasa leaving him all the time.

It is interesting to note that when Tsukasa lived with her aunt, a moon rock was under her protection and the aunt claimed this rock “relieved Tsukasa”. Is that because Tsukasa is originally from the moon? Is she Princess Kaguya or her reincarnation? Perhaps she was sent to Earth to search for the real Kaguya or her reincarnation to bring back to the moon. What connection does Tsukasa have to Princess Kaguya or the moon people? Is Tsukasa immortal?

Many facts in the anime indicate that Tsukasa is immortal. For example, when Tsukasa talks about Japanese history, it sounds like she was there to witness those events. When she rescued her friend on the cliff side, her friend said she was sixteen at the time, but that was many years ago and Tsukasa was it quiet sixteen. It is also interesting to note that Nasa hit Tsukasa on the night of the full moon. There were also hints that Tsukasa’s purple hair accessory possesses some powers, but we haven’t seen those powers yet.
