Head of CDC on Wednesday said that “now is not the right time” to lift Covid-19 restriction. He made this remark after the Governor of Texas announced that Texas was 100% open.
In a virtual news conference, Rochelle Walensky, who is the director of CDC said that the next two months will play an important role in deciding the trajectory of the pandemic.
Not The Right Time To Ease Covid-19 Restrictions: US Health Officials
She noted that infection rates all over the country have reduced. But, the new covid variant from the UK is highly transmissible. If proper care is not taken now, it can lead to a surge in cases once again. Thus, it can threaten and destroy the progress we have made.
Dr. Walensky also added that pandemic fatigue is winning now as people have been ignoring measures that can help the US in driving down the virus.
Director also said that just now the US has started the vaccination drive and people can start roaming around freely once the entire nation gets vaccinated. Thus, just three to four months of restrain and restriction can enable us to win the war against Covid-19.
Dr. Walensky urged people to wear masks and also encouraged community people to keep on wearing masks. She also advocated people to avoid travels, crowds, and also added that people should pay attention to personal hygiene no matter if the government mandates or not.
On Tuesday, Texas governor Greg Abbott lifted the state’s mandate for wearing masks. In addition to this, other restrictions on businesses are also removed. The governor said that Texas has mastered the daily habits needed to avoid getting infected from the virus.
After lifting the restriction, Texas becomes the largest state to no longer require one of the effective ways to slow down the spread of the virus.
The virus has killed more than 42000 people. As per many doctors, the big city leaders are now bracing for another resurgence of the virus by taking such decisions. One hospital staff in Houston said that hospital staff are making sure that they have enough ventilators.
Federal health officials have already warned states not to let their guard down. Many health officials have made the claim that the pandemic is not over yet and it is important for people as well as the government to make wise decisions.
Abbott, who is a republican leader has faced much criticism from his party. The mask mandate was imposed in Texas almost 8-months ago.
Abbott after removing the mask mandate said that removing the mandate does not end personal responsibility of people. It’s just that the state mandate is over. People can decide for their safety. Restaurant owners as well as businesses are now thinking how to manage the situation when people will visit. School administration in Texas are worried about how the mask mandate ending will impact the 5 million public school students in texas.
Only California and New york had more number of Covid-19 cases than Texas and this move by the governor can harm the entire nation.
