ALBANY, N.Y. On her first day in office, New York’s new governor admitted that the state had almost 12,000 more COVID-19 fatalities than previous Gov. Andrew Cuomo reported. Hochul told NPR that the public needs an accurate picture of events. They need to know the truth, whether it is good or terrible. This is how we rebuild confidence.

According to death certificate statistics provided to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 55,400 individuals have died from the coronavirus in New York.

That is up from 43,400 on Cuomo’s final day in office. His leadership during the COVID-19 epidemic earned him praise, but at least 11 women, which he denied, accused him of sexual harassment.

Because of acknowledged flaws in Cuomo’s statistics, federal health authorities and several academic institutes monitoring COVID-19 fatalities in the US have used the higher number for months.

Nevertheless, Hochul, who was lieutenant governor before becoming governor, insists full disclosure is required. Hochul stated on MSNBC his government would be transparent and he will make happen many things that were not occurring,

In July, the Associated Press first revealed the significant disparity between the Cuomo administration’s statistics and the state’s CDC data.

Cuomo’s COVID-19 mortality figure includes only laboratory-confirmed fatalities recorded via a state system that gathers data from hospitals, nursing homes, and adult care institutions.

According to Hochul, the incident left out individuals who died at home, in hospice, jail, or state-run homes for disabled people. It also eliminated individuals who died with COVID-19 but never had a positive test to prove it. In the early months of the epidemic, hundreds of New Yorkers perished daily.

Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, claimed the previous administration only reported verified COVID fatalities to guarantee accuracy but reported presumed deaths to the CDC.

Azzopardi claimed New York always disclosed and made these statistics public. He did not say why the state did not include fatalities outside hospitals and nursing homes.

The higher figure appeared on the state website Wednesday.

On behalf of the AP, the state Health Department declined to make an expert accessible to explain its choice to provide the lower number solely.

Cuomo became a pandemic hero in the spring of 2020, when New York was the country’s worst hotspot, for his daily PowerPoint briefings and harsh but comforting tone. He has an International Emmy and a book on crisis leadership.

However, Cuomo’s detractors have long said he manipulated coronavirus data to boost his image. Months later, it emerged that his administration had reduced nursing home deaths by omitting many who died after being transferred to hospitals.

Last year, Cuomo misled the public by claiming that New York had a lower rate of COVID-19 deaths than other states.  Hochul did not immediately respond to a request to interview him to remove state Health Commissioner Howard Zucker. After Hochul’s revelation, Republican state Sen asked for an inquiry into New York’s COVID-19 response in nursing homes.

To restore public confidence, anybody involved in altering or concealing crucial facts from the public must be removed from the state government. One of the senators asking for Zucker’s resignation is Sen.
