New Amsterdam’s Producers Revisited The Series’ Pilot For Finale Inspiration

According to an interview published by Deadline with New Amsterdam co-executive producer and series creator David Schulner and co-executive producer (as well as series finale director) Peter Horton, the writing team researched the series’ pilot to come full circle to close the show ended.

“We knew the ending had to come from the beginning, simply because that’s good storytelling. So we definitely went back to the pilot to figure out where these characters started and what a satisfying but surprising ending would be,” Schulner noted. Because of this, fans were treated to back-to-basics flashbacks of each of the series’ main characters deciding when they would become doctors, and why the finale featured Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) and Martin McIntyre (Mike Doyle), who reunited in a romantic remarriage ceremony and Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims), who finally finds love with Gabrielle (Toya Turner), even though it meant jumping into a long-distance relationship.

Other ideas came into the finals from other areas — sometimes from people who weren’t even on the show’s staff. According to an interview with E! News, Schulner revealed that the idea of Luna returning to the hospital as an adult doctor came from an idea shared by his 11-year-old daughter, Ella. He initially brushed the idea aside, but then Laura Valdivia, one of the typists, also suggested the idea. This led to the idea getting the green light.

Not every character had an audience-loving ending (and according to Reddit fans of Freema Agyeman’s Dr. Helen Sharpe, the show actively undid the good it accomplished on the show). But it’s fair to say that the show’s producers haven’t made an effort to put an end to the show’s fans.
