The cast and crew of Netflix’s One Piece have sent a special message to help Eiichiro Oda celebrate the manga’s groundbreaking 25th anniversary as the One Piece live-action series premieres on Netflix!

The manga was first published by Oda in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1997. As a result, the franchise is going all out this summer, not only with the return of the manga for its concluding saga, but also with a brand new feature film hitting theaters later this year and a new live-action series adaptation with Netflix. The extent of what lies ahead is only just being explored.

One Piece 25th Anniversary Live Action Crew Manga Video

The new video was first shown as part of the One Piece Day livestream, a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the release of the first chapter of One Piece. The showrunner of the live-action adaptation, Steve Maeda (X-Files), introduces the video by talking about his favorite character Usopp, who he claims is the most likable in the entire series.

Trafalgar Law is the favorite character of showrunner Matt Owens (The Defenders), who also created the series. Owens stated, “He has the coolest power and like the other key One Piece characters, he has a tragic past. These poor children have been through so much.”

The Straw Hat Pirates’ navigator has always been Emily Rudd (Fear Street), who will play Nami in the Netflix revival, and she assures viewers that was true even before she was given the role. Watch the special video below:

Unfortunately, as of this writing, Netflix hasn’t decided on a premiere date or window for its new live-action series One Piece. Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the original series, was involved in the production; showrunner, producer and writer Steven Maeda; and executive producer Matt Owens.

Cast members include Inaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, Taz Skylar as Sanji, and Morgan Davies as Koby. Also, Alvida is portrayed by Ilia Isorel’s Paulino and Helmeppo by Aidan Scott. Jeff Ward as Buggy, Arlong is portrayed by McKinley Belcher III, Garp by Vincent Regan, Shanks by Peter Gadiot, Fullbody by Jean Henry, Nojiko by Chioma Umeala, Kaya by Celeste Zoots, Captain Morgan by Langley Kirkwood and Klahadore by Alexander Mantis.

Netflix’s new live-action actor

Along with the anniversary video, Netflix also revealed a new cast member: Colton Osorio, a young actor best known for his work on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, will play young Monkey D. Luffy. Osorio joins Mihawk (Steven Ward from The Day We Didn’t Meet) and Chef Zeff (Craig Fairbrass from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare) as one of many new cast members introduced by Netflix this year.

The live action film One Piece is currently being filmed in Cape Town, South Africa. Netflix has yet to release any actual footage from the series, but the streaming service has made several behind-the-scenes videos of the highly-anticipated adaptation available. One of these videos takes viewers on a detailed tour of the pirate ship sets, which include scale replicas of the Going Merry, the Straw Hats’ legendary original ship, as well as the flagship of the Baratie and Iron Mace Alvida, the Miss Dear Duck.
