When Mark Harmon spoke to News Center 7 to promote “The Deliberate Stranger” in 1986, he spoke openly about following in Ted Bundy’s footsteps. The actor’s initial thought was to meet Bundy, who was arrested in 1978 (via WKRG) for murdering over 30 women. “When I first got the script, my very first reaction was to get on the first plane to Florida and try to meet him,” Harmon said. The actor went on to say director Marvin Chomsky advised him against it. “This is a guy who never admitted his guilt, so a huge percentage of what I would have hoped to see in Florida could have come from meeting a charming guy that everyone else initially thought they knew.” , Harmon said.

Rather than choosing to meet Bundy, Harmon took a different approach that was far more empathetic to the victims. Because the actor wanted to portray Bundy “very honestly,” he decided it was best to spend time with people who knew the killer personally. In a separate interview with the same outlet (via YouTube), Harmon discussed how he’s spent a lot of time studying the killer and how interesting it’s been to meet people in Bundy’s life. “I’ve been hanging out with people who knew Bundy pretty well,” revealed Harmon. “That people sometimes confused me with the real person, I guess, is a kind of pat on the back.”

The future NCIS actor has been praised for his performance as a serial killer, and TV Guide said, “Harmon sets himself free admirably, using his piercing eyes to relax and charm [to get] Inside [the] the solipsistic amorality of character.”
