Speaking to Screen Rant to promote director Rodrigo García’s Raymond and Ray, Ethan Hawke revealed an interesting fact about Moulin Rouge and himself to get hold of. “I have for ‘Moulin Rouge!’ given one of the greatest screen tests of my life! I didn’t get the role. I destroyed that audition,” he told the publication. At the end of the day, the powers that be would decide that Ewan McGregor – the man who stars alongside Hawke in “Raymond and Ray” – would be a better fit for the role, and the rest is history.
Although he gave everything he had at the audition just to not get a spot in “Moulin Rouge!” When all was said and done, Hawke accepted the rejection. He adds: “It just shows you how much I like Ewan’s work. I saw the film anyway on opening day and loved it. So I got over it.” Though, he jokes that his audition video might someday make it public, and if it does, people will reconsider a few things about Hawke missing out on the role. Still, it’s safe to say he’s had a pretty solid career since then, so it’s not like it hurt him too much in the long run.
It stands to reason that Ethan Hawke would have made a great Christian, but as fate would have it, Ewan McGregor was the man for the job.
