Though much has been made of the involvement of Oscar-winning documentary director Morgan Neville, Mickey: The Story of a Mouse will not be directed by Neville, who served as producer on it. Instead, it is directed by Jeff Malmberg.

A veteran film and television producer and editor, Malmberg cut his teeth in the world of documentaries, editing films such as Red White Black & Blue and Women in White before turning himself in to 2010’s Marwencol turned to directing documentaries. The film tells the story of artist and photographer Mark Hogancamp, who overcame an extremely debilitating violent heist by building a 1:6 scale miniature WWII-era town in his backyard. The film received widespread critical acclaim and even won multiple awards, which inspired Robert Zemeckis to direct his story for the controversial 2018 fact-based drama Welcome to Marwen.

After the success of Marwencol, Malmberg continued to work on documentaries, although the relationship between fictional constructions and personal and cultural stories remained his favorite subject. In the well-received but underappreciated 2017 film Spettacolo, he told the story of Monticchiello, a small mountain town in Tuscany, Italy that maintains an annual tradition of townspeople banding together to save their lives and lives to bring important community events to a stage play. Given his experience with stories of metafictional interest, it’s no wonder Malmberg was tapped to tell the story of Disney through its greatest cultural icon.
