In a January 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, Michelle Williams opened up about the most memorable roles of her career so far — of course, “Blue Valentine” was in the list. During the interview, she brought up the notable aspect of the fact that most of the dialogue was improvised and what that process was like.

Williams said: “[Director] derek [Cianfrance] would set up these rehearsals for us where he would say, ‘Okay, now I want you to do a family budget. And now I want you to fight. And now I want you to try and fix the sink. And now I want you to go to the playground with your daughter. And now I want you to take her to the playground after you had a fight.”

In addition, these rehearsals sometimes extended over a long period of time – even half a day. The actress continued, “We had a whole night improvising. We had a 12 hour twilight to dawn shot on the streets of upstate New York Everyone improvised.” She repeated that they had no plan at all, and then said that she did random things throughout the night, such as tap dancing (a scene that made it into the film where Williams’ character tap-dances dances while Gosling’s character plays the ukulele).
