Esther’s storyline in Season 5 doesn’t get any better for the teenager. After some time at the Red Center to prepare her for her first assignment, the only kindness she finds is from Janine. Janine befriends her and, as someone who has already been through all the anguish a maid can go through, tries to offer Esther some comfort and advice. Things take a turn for the worst for Esther when Commander Putnam (Stephen Michael Kunken) takes advantage of her on their first meeting before she is officially given a job.
Her anger and pain at the incident prompted her to support herself, and Janine poisoned chocolate to kill them both. Taken to the hospital where they are both in a coma, Janine wakes up first. However, while Esther is in the stomach, the doctors confirm that she is three weeks pregnant, a shock to Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) as Esther has not yet been posted. The scene in Episode 6 where Aunt Lydia confronts Esther in his hospital room about what had happened and watching Esther remember the atrocities that were done to her was difficult to watch. Watching Esther twist in her bonds and yell at Aunt Lydia to go was excruciating.
