During a meeting on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” (via YouTube), Glen Powell shared a very funny story that could have been tragic if things had gone a little differently. It all happened because Tom Cruise insisted on skydiving during the reshoots of Top Gun: Maverick. Powell says he brought a date to jump, but then found out that Cruise demanded that he dive alone, with no instructor strapped to the slide with him.
“So I literally have to jump out of this plane by myself,” Powell shared. “I couldn’t find my tongue when I fell,” he added. And amusingly, Powell says that when he thought his life was about to end, it was Cruise who was on his mind. “It’s the nightmare everyone’s talking about. But my first thought — which isn’t a selfless thought — but my first thought was, ‘Oh, Tom just killed me. He’s going to feel so bad.’”
Eventually, of course, Powell found the strap for his parachute, made it safely to the ground, and even went up for another jump. But it’s fascinating to imagine that he would have come this close to what would have been a career and a life-ending skydiving accident just because Cruise insisted on making the jump on his own.
