Maverick After Watching It More Than Once

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 17 Second

“Talk to me, Goose” isn’t the only line in Top Gun: Maverick that is repeated from the original film. Another Goose-related statement that reappears is when Rooster asks Maverick to “do some of that pilot s***” to get her out of a tight spot. But many of the shadows and echoes of the original film found in the sequel are repeated scenarios and camera angles.

When Phoenix (Monica Barbaro) and Bob (Lewis Pullman) are forced out after a bird strike, the next shot shows Rooster sitting in a dark room with his head bowed. It’s reminiscent of the scene after Goose’s death, when Maverick is filmed the same way, only this time, thankfully, Phoenix and Bob are unharmed.

The references aren’t just to somber moments, however, as the pilots face the same awkward first day when an unexpected instructor arrives. In Top Gun, Maverick and Goose watch Charlie after the serenade scene. In Top Gun: Maverick, it’s Hangman (Glen Powell) and Coyote (Greg Tarzan Davis) after they threw Maverick out of Penny’s Bar the night before.

Penny is another source of deja vu when she talks about Maverick’s cock being on fire (as opposed to his hair, according to Charlie in “Top Gun”). When Penny shows up at the end of the film to reconnect with Maverick, she stands against her Porsche and recreates another Top Gun image between Charlie and Maverick. These subtle inclusions connect the films both subliminally and literally, tying them more closely together in our minds.
