Anger and disappointment flared on social media shortly after it was announced that Sabra would be appearing in Captain America: New World Order. Much of the outcry came from Palestinians and Palestinian supporters, who have expressed a strong disinterest in seeing them appear on screen as the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to unfold. As the New York Times notes, many have taken her MCU arrival to indicate that Marvel Studios has chosen a side since she is canonically a member of Mossad: one of Israel’s most prominent real-world intelligence agencies.
Hoping to quell any outrage over Sabra’s presence in the upcoming Captain America movie, Marvel Studios released a brief statement on the matter. “While our characters and stories are inspired by the comics, they are constantly being reimagined for the screen and audiences today, and the filmmakers are taking a fresh approach with the character Sabra, who was first introduced in the comics over 40 years ago.” , it reads (about diversity). It remains to be seen how this reinvented Sabra will flow into the film’s plot, how prominently she will appear, and if she will appear in future MCU productions.
Captain America: New World Order hits theaters on May 3, 2024.
