According to Variety, MCU Phase 4 films The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will swap release dates next year. Instead of releasing on July 28, 2023, Quantumania will hit theaters on February 17, 2023. The Marvels, the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, is now slated to premiere on July 28th.
While previous changes are tied to production issues and other issues like COVID-19, sources tell Variety that this latest development is simply the result of Quantumania being further along in its creative process than expected. The film has already completed principal photography, according to the sources, while The Marvels isn’t quite there yet. Currently, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released on May 5th, 2023 and no other major changes have been made.
As Variety noted, the Disney and Marvel Studios move will likely result in a number of MCU diehards holding onto their gems, as swapping the two films suggests they won’t be as directly linked as other projects have been have done past, like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”. Following on from the second Doctor Strange film is Thor: Love and Thunder, which is set to open on July 8th.
