“Tár” is primarily a psychological drama that delves deep into the power dynamics of careers and relationships. These heavy themes also appeared frequently in some of Martin Scorsese’s films over the decades. At the 2022 New York Film Critics Circle Awards ceremony, Scorsese presented Todd Field with the award for best director and shared his praise for the feature, calling Field’s work on the film “a real high-wire act” (via Variety).

The Kundun filmmaker also explained, “For so long, so many of us have been watching movies that pretty much tell us where we’re going.” He continued, “I mean, they take us by the hand and even if it’s upsetting at times, comforting us along the way that everything will be okay in the end.” The director called this audience conditioning “insidious” and ultimately contagious because it provides easy avenues for audience-engaging storytelling. Scorsese then contextualized what “Tár” was all about, which he saw as a new hope for challenging art.

In conclusion, he described the film as the “dark days” of cinema, noting, “The clouds lifted as I witnessed Todd’s film ‘Tár.’ What you’ve done, Todd, is that the structure of the film you’ve created doesn’t allow for that.”
