In an interview with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, George RR Martin said, “The original Iron Throne in the books is very high and the king is sitting up there, he’s 10, 15 feet above everyone looking down at the people . It was made by blacksmiths, it’s not pretty, it’s not symmetrical, it’s full of hundreds and hundreds of swords.”
Martin also explained why the Iron Throne in the Game of Thrones TV series doesn’t exactly match the description from his books. “When we actually started making Game of Thrones, we didn’t have a soundstage with a ceiling high enough to put it in there, so they built the one that’s kind of iconic for Game of Thrones . ‘” Although the Iron Throne in Game of Thrones isn’t as massive as described in the books, it’s still recognizable as the Iron Throne because it’s still fairly large, crude-looking, and made up of a large number of swords.
Fans of House of the Dragon may have noticed that the Iron Throne is still not a dozen feet in the air on this show, but it’s taller and has more swords surrounding it, making it look even more intimidating. In fact, the Iron Throne in “House of the Dragon” is dangerous on set because it is partly made of real weapons. George RR Martin told Colbert, “But once we had the new show we had a little more space and we were able to expand it.” Apparently for House of the Dragon they were able to get higher ceilings so the Iron Throne could be portrayed as as George RR Martin intended.
