Who is Kurama?

For those who are new to the world of YuYu Hakusho, Yoko Kurama aka Shuichi Minamino and Kurama the Yoko (Fox Demon) in the English dub is one of the main heroes in the anime/manga series YuYu Hakusho, written and illustrated was by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Kurama has more to offer than meets the eye. 15 years ago, a silver-haired fox demon was pursued by his enemies and mortally wounded. To save his life, he transferred his spirit to the body of a newborn human baby named Shuichi Minamino.

Once Kurama inhabited the baby’s body, his psyche gained control. Throughout the series, he struggles with being part demon and part human, trying to find a balance between his two personalities.

After the Dark Tournament, he can switch between his human and demon forms at will. His most common form is his human form, but he is referred to as “Kurama” by everyone except his distant classmates, his mother, and his foster family, who refer to him as Shuichi Minamino.

What do the two forms of Kurama look like?

Kurama’s human form has light green eyes and long, bright red hair. In the manga, he has brown eyes and is brunette. Due to his long hair and delicate features, Shuichi is often mistaken for a woman he hates. In the anime, his school uniform is a reddish pink color with matching pants, while in the manga it is a dark blue color.

In his demon fox form, Kurama has golden eyes with slit pupils, silver fox ears, a tail, and long, flowing silvery-white hair. He wears a white sleeveless yukata with slit sides, hakama pants, and zori sandals.

What is Kurama’s personality like and what are his abilities?

Of the main characters in the YuYu Hakusho anime, Kurama is the most calculating, cunning, and analytical. In battle, he quickly recognizes his opponents’ patterns, which gives him an advantage.

Kurama has highly attuned combat instincts, giving him a physical advantage over his opponents. However, Kurama prefers to rely on his brain and likes to analyze his opponents while performing different strategies based on their skills and fighting styles.

Although his instincts take over in battle, allowing him to easily decapitate an opponent, he has a kind heart and would sacrifice anything to protect his friends or family. Despite his cunning, this makes him a trustworthy ally. Several villains in the series try to take advantage of Kurama’s kindness to defeat him.

Kurama also has an interesting ability to shut off his emotions so he doesn’t get distracted during battle. While he usually emerges from a fight the most injured, he still emerges victorious and always manages to use an ace in the hole.

When Kurama is in his demon form, he is known as Yoko Kurama and tends to act in a more cruel, vengeful, and merciless manner, but he still retains his intellect. Yoko Kurama seems to enjoy playing sadistically with his enemies, as shown during the Dark Tournament.

In the anime, it appears at first that Kurama has two completely different personalities, but it is later explained that their souls merged when his demonic spirit entered Minamino Shuichi’s human body, so it is him both the demon Kurama and the human Minamino Shuuichi.

He is a close friend of Yusuke as the Spirit Detective spared his life and willingly offered his own life to save Kurama and his human mother at one point during the series. His friendship with Hiei is based on an alliance to defeat the Eight Hands – a group of evil demons.
