William Charles Dement was born on July 29, 1928, in Wenatchee, Wash., within the north-central a part of the state, and grew up additional south in Walla Walla. His father, Charles, was a tax agent and bookkeeper, and his mom, Kathryn (Severyns) Dement, was a homemaker.
