North Carolina has discontinued the license plates with the Confederate battle flag symbol engraved on them. The specialty license plate will not be issued further. The decision was taken citing that the symbol has a grave potential to offend.
North Carolina DOT spokesman Steve Abbott said in a statement that the state’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is not allowing new specialty license plates. They are not even renewing the already existing specialty license plates. Issue and renewal of license plates bearing the confederate battle flag or any kind of variation are no longer in practice since the start of the year.
License Plates With Confederate Battle Flag To Be Discontinued In North Carolina
The statement given by Abbott read that the Division of Motor Vehicles is determined about not allowing to issue the specialty license plates that bear the Confederate battle flag. The Confederate battle fact posses a potential that can offend those who view them. Therefore, the DMV have come to a conclusion that the license plates with the flag are inappropriate and the Confederate flag remains the property of the state.
The specialty license plates with the flag belongs to the North Carolina Division of Sons of Confederate veterans. While calling the step taken by the DMV as discriminative, the group didn’t welcome the decision. They also claimed in a statement that the action taken to discontinue the license plates is against the law.
In a statement given by the group their showed their dismay over the decision taken by the North Carolina’s Division of Motor Vehicles. They claimed that their logo, the Confederate flag, is legally registered. They claimed that they are a hereditary civic organization. The group is really pride of their ancestry. The deep root of their heritage and culture and the unforgettable sacrifices made by their ancestors for the southern states, that also includes North Carolina, cannot be denied.
The group cited hatred towards the southerner’s as the provoking reason behind this discrimination. According to the group, some people in North Carolina are ignorant towards the true history of the state. When this ignorance is combined with the hatred of some groups towards the Southerners, have fueled the way for discontinuing the Confederate logo bearing license plates.
The group further added that some racist organizations along with some intolerant politicians are behind the decision. They just can’t withstand someone who doesn’t follow their way of thinking. Such people, who drives hatred, don’t even shy away from using violence.
However, the DOT stated that the decision to discontinue the Confederate bearing license plates is in accord with a ruling in the North Carolina Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans vs Faulkner. But the DMV will continue to give recognition the Sons of Confederate Veterans as a civic organization that is entitled to issuance of the specialty license plate.
The DOT statement continued that the classification of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans as a civic organization is not entitled to dictating of a government speech on the license plate. However, they are eager to find a way out and claimed that they have worked, and are continuing their efforts to work with the SCV group for developing a different artwork for their specialty license plate. But the artwork should not contain the Confederate battle flag. The DOT said that these efforts were unsuccessful and therefore the DMV had to take the step to discontinue license plates that have the confederate battle flags on them.
It is believed that the Confederate flag is a symbol of White supremacy in the United States and North Carolina is not the only one who have reconsidered its association.
