During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kumail Nanjiani detailed his circumstances in preparation for “Welcome to Chippendales,” describing his circumstances as “a gift” (via YouTube).
“I’m the only one who doesn’t take his shirt off all the time!” said Nanjiani. As Jimmy Kimmel clarified, the role actually required Nanjiani to get out of shape, with the actor explaining, “[Banerjee] can’t look like someone who could get on stage and dance with them, and for one small point in my life I looked like I could.” He went on to say that he ate four large meals a day during the filming process “I came home at night and ordered a fried chicken sandwich and fries, ate it, and went straight to bed,” he told Kimmel. “It was wonderful!”
Although not restricting his diet obviously relieved the actor, his new diet had a negative impact on his health. He said of his chicken sandwich meal before bed, “I made it so many times Jimmy, I started having trouble breathing in the middle of the night … I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for breath.” .. like someone who just moved into a creaky old house in a horror movie.”
After consulting a doctor, Nanjiani was diagnosed with sleep apnea caused by his poor diet. According to medics, the actor stopped breathing 15 times an hour. After regretting Kimmel’s difficulties in using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, Nanjiani shared that he was fortunate to no longer need the machine after adjusting his diet.
Welcome to Chippendales airs November 22 on Hulu.
