What is the plot of Kaiju #8?

The story takes place in an alternate Japan, where the population is regularly attacked by gigantic monsters called Kaiju. It’s up to the Japanese Defense Force to kill them.

Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro, childhood friends, both vow to become members of the Defense Force when they grow up after their city was destroyed by Kaiju.

Nowadays, Mina has become a famous commander of the 3rd unit of the Defense Forces, while Kafka has failed the exam several times and is a member of the clean-up team called Monster Sweeper Inc. Your task is to dispose of the corpses of the Kaiju after they are killed again.

Kafka’s life is turned upside down when a small, talking kaiju flies into his mouth and he gains the ability to transform himself into a “monster”. The Defense Force calls his monster form “Kaiju No. 8th”.

Kafka is fully conscious in monster form but gains superhuman strength. Kaiju #8 becomes the first monster to escape from the Defense Force.
