Of the portrayal in Walker Independence, Cortez said, “Native people obviously have always been in the Western genre. I think people expect them in this genre and I think they deserve a place there. However, representation can do more harm than good for marginalized groups of people if the show does not bring authenticity and care to the portrayals.

“It’s like for me, I just want to make sure we’re doing it in a respectful way [and] authentic, which makes this character feel like a complex human being that people can relate to and isn’t just there to serve the story or another character,” Cortez added. “A large part of my responsibility is to treat the Apache language and Apache culture with the respect it deserves. It’s one of the few times we’ve seen that language on screen so the responsibility of getting that right is hard and I always do my best and I’m always nervous that people just don’t see the weight the.”

With such a large and widespread audience, “Walker Independence” pulls off something truly special, and Cortez only hopes fans will recognize the weight of it. “So I hope people see how important it is that we hear this language and people will hear it across the country and maybe across the world, that would be incredible,” he said. “And it’s a blessing, so I’m just grateful to everyone behind this and everyone who’s supporting here, and it’s exciting. So hopefully I’ll rise to that. I will do my best.”
