To promote his appearance on National Treasure: Edge of History, Justin Bartha sat down with Variety to discuss his return to Riley Poole, one of the most notable roles of his career. When the outlet floated the idea of a full comeback for the franchise in the form of a third feature-length project, Bartha revealed it could happen one day.

“There’s a script. That’s all I’m going to say,” the actor said of National Treasure 3. “Actually, there were a few different scripts, but the only thing that has to happen is that all the stars match. I’d seen something a while ago, and it was solid, but the unsung hero of these movies that doesn’t get mentioned just as often is Jon Turtletaub. These films are really an extension of his being. He is very smart and funny and has a vivacity that reflects the tone of the films. I think he has to be really comfortable and comfortable and he can see the film before it happens – and he’s getting closer to that.”

Earlier this year, National Treasure star Nicholas Cage said he has no plans to continue the series, saying too much time has passed since The Book of Secrets. Series producer Jerry Bruckheimer, however, told a different story by telling Comicbook.com that he was working on a script and was sending it to Cage for approval. Based on Bertha’s comments, it appears Bruckheimer finalized the script and even sent a version to the actor. Hopefully the success of Edge of History will set the ball rolling for a possible National Treasure 3.
