In a new ad for Verizon, Julian Edelman is wandering across a soccer field with his cell phone trying to get a signal when Cecily Strong, who for some reason is sitting on a giant Verizon sign, jokes, “Ironically, Edelman has shut down the reception battle. Edelman responds by saying, “Two things I hate dropping: balls and calls.” Strong tells him he needs to switch to the more reliable Verizon network, where he can get a free 5G phone, after which Strong begins , throwing balls at the former patriot, which, of course, he easily catches.
While the YouTube comments section is largely positive for the ad, not everyone liked the commercial. On Twitter, user @The_J_Breeding wrote, “I feel like Julian Edelman wearing a Patriots shirt in this Verizon commercial is like a bass player wearing his own band’s shirt.” This wasn’t quite as harsh as the response on Reddit from u/Imaginary_Ad_3912, which went to a thread on the subreddit r/CommercialsIHate where people were talking about how much they dislike Cecily Strong, especially in their Verizon ads. “Whoever she is, this new ad starring Julian Edelman just sucks,” they wrote. So maybe the ad won’t be for everyone, but it’s worth a hearty laugh for some.
