Jenna Fischer Opens Up About Keeping The Office’s Biggest Secret

In this age of media saturation, it seems difficult to really surprise. However, many fans were surprised when Michael Scott returned to The Office for his final installment. That’s partly because there were no leaks regarding the cameo, and the only people who knew managed to keep quiet about the surprise.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Fischer was asked if he should keep Steve Carell’s involvement a secret, which was no easy task. She explained: “It was really hard not to tell Angela. Rainn [Wilson] was like, ‘Jenna, don’t you dare.’ And part of me said, ‘Listen, if I tell Angela and then don’t tell Oscar [Nunez] [and] You choose who I tell, and Angela has to keep it a secret from Brian [Baumgartner] and Kate [Flannery].’ I thought, ‘Oh my god. I don’t want to start anything.’ So I kept the secret from Angela.” She goes on to say that they didn’t want any teasing about a possible surprise appearance because they wanted the audience to be as surprised as possible. And it worked. Fischer even concludes by saying, “[Greg Daniels] I wanted this moment to just shock people to death. And it did. I mean, I remember the online response.”

The result is one of the most impressive series finales of all time, and it was a source of great joy for fans to see Michael Scott once again fooling around with his old colleagues. The Office BFFs: Tales of The Office From Two Best Friends Who Were There is available May 17th.
